Ben Yagoda, professor of English and author of the book When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It: The Parts of Speech for Better and/or Worse, was featured Feb. 22 on WHYY-FM's Fresh Air program. Yagoda also wrote an opinion piece on language in the Feb. 19 Los Angeles Times and about writer St. Clair McKelway in the Feb. 13 Columbia Journalism Review.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Feb. 20 Fortune magazine piece about chief executive officers and their loss of power in the face of rule changes. Elson also was quoted in a Feb. 22 News Journal story about succession plans at WSFS as its president and chief executive officer prepares to step down, in a Feb. 15 Reuters story about Caremark and in a Feb. 13 Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) Times Leader story about Commonwealth Telephone.

Dewey Caron, professor of entomology and wildlife ecology, was quoted in a Feb. 20 News Journal story about a mysterious blight claiming honeybees. "We are finding some unusual pathogens in the bees, but at this point we don't know if it's cause or effect," Caron said. "The best bet does seem to be something that's causing weakening of their immune system."

Robert W. Birkmire, director of UD's Institute of Energy Conversion, was quoted in a Feb. 20 News Journal story announcing the awarding of the Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit to Lawrence L. Kazmerski, director of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Center for Photovoltaics at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Willett M. Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was cited in a Feb. 19 Business Week brief about wind power. His recent studies about wind power potential on the East Coast also were cited by LiveScience on Feb. 15.

Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Professor for the Study of Law and Public Policy, wrote an opinion piece in the Feb. 19 News Journal on the value of education for inner city youths, citing the rise of Davel Patrick who on Jan. 4 became the first African-American governor of Massachusetts.

Wenbo Li, professor of mathematical sciences, was quoted in a Feb. 19 News Journal story about lottery number selections by players who put stock in luck and superstition. “I have no faith in any of those,” Li told the newspaper, adding the numbers are drawn by pure chance.

Lance Winn, assistant professor of art, was quoted in a Feb. 19 News Journal story about the exhibition InWords: The Art of Language on view through March 20 at the University Gallery in Old College.

William Latham, associate professor of economics, and Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, were quoted in Feb. 18 News Journal stories surrounding the announcement of plans to idle the DaimlerChysler Newark Assembly Plant. Jonathan Russ, assistant professor of history, was quoted in a Feb. 14 News Journal story on the plant.

Tina Martin, head coach of the UD women's basketball team, was the subject of a feature in the Feb. 18 News Journal.

Samantha Cleaver, a UD alumna, wrote an extensive piece in the Feb. 18 Washington Post about her experiences teaching children with disabilities. After earning a master's degree in public administration at UD, she joined the D.C. Teaching Fellows program.
