10:51 a.m., Aug. 25, 2006--New and returning UD students will be welcomed in style with a wide range of orientation and entertainment events set for move-in weekend, Saturday-Monday, Aug. 26-28. The following is a summary of some featured mandatory attendance events. For a complete list of events, including special meet-and-greet meals, religious services and residence hall and academic orientation sessions, new students should consult their Fall Delaworld booklets, or speak with their resident assistants.

First Night at UD, Saturday, Aug. 26

Set for 10 p.m.-midnight in Multipurpose rooms A, B and C in the Trabant University Center, this Residence Life-sponsored event will kick off the fall semester and give new arrivals reason to celebrate their first night on campus with a variety of fun activities. Part social event, part orientation, the evening will feature music chosen by perennial favorite (and UD alumnus) DJ Amaze, ice-breaker games, arts and crafts and do-it-yourself tie-dye shirts, courtesy of UD's S.O.S. (Sexual Offence Support) task force.

JustUDoIt!: The Campus Breakout, Sunday, Aug. 27

Beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the Trabant University Center, Perkins Student Center and other locations on campus, Campus Breakout, sponsored by UD Student Centers, promises fun, friendly competition and laughs with activities that range from stand-up comedy routines by guest celebrities Dan Ahdoot and Marianne Sierk to recreational games and live music.

Here is a list of events, times and locations for Campus Breakout events:

  • Music--Tyrone Wells, 9-10 p.m., Food Court, Trabant University Center. Heard on One Tree Hill, Rescue Me and several other TV shows, Wells' catchy tunes, lyrics and guitar riffs appeal to fans of nearly every style of music. WVUD-91.3 FM, the Voice of the University of Delaware, will provide DJs, music and local acts certain to entertain everyone from 8:30-11:30 p.m. on the Patio of the Perkins Student Center. Rain location is in the Scrounge. 3 Legged Fox, last semester's winner of Battle of the Bands, will perform its blend of reggae and funk from 10:30-11:30 p.m. in the Food Court of the Trabant University Center;
  • Tune-In Game Show, 9-10 p.m., Multipurpose Room A, Trabant University Center. Promising fast-paced fun, this music trivia game also offers cash prizes. (No musical talent or in-depth knowledge of bands required.);
  • Balloon Creations & Body Art, 8:30-11:30 p.m., Food Court, Trabant University Center. Students with an eye toward style can sport temporary tattoos and unique designs to start conversations and break the ice;
  • Billiards, Table Tennis, Air Hockey, Video Games and Foosball, 8:30-11:30 p.m., Hen Zone, Perkins Student Center. Recreational games and activities are free all night for those up for some light competition;
  • Caricaturist, 8:30-11:30 p.m., Concourse, Perkins Student Center. For a good laugh and a fun keepsake, students can sit for a quick caricature and walk away with a conversation piece;
  • Movie--Wedding Crashers, 10 p.m.-midnight, Trabant University Center Theatre. This “movie of the year” as voted by UD students last semester, is quirky, fun, endlessly quotable and appealing to all audiences. Free movie posters also will be available;
  • Ghost Tour and History of The Green, 9-10:30 p.m., or 10:30 p.m.-midnight, The Green, Central Campus (Old College). Local ghost experts Ed Okonowicz and Mike Dixon will take the brave of spirit on an inside and outside tour of the University's most haunted sites while narrating how creepy historic events (including foul play) have contributed to University legends. Tours are limited to 80 participants (first-come, first-served basis) per outing; and
  • Comedy--Dan Ahdoot, 9-10 p.m., Bacchus Theatre, Perkins Student Center. Known for his accessible stage manner and edgy wit, Dan Ahdoot has been featured on NBC's reality show, Last Comic Standing and on Comedy Central's Premium Blend. Comedy Central favorite Marianne Sierk will appear from 10:30-11:30 p.m. in Multipurpose Room A in the Trabant University Center. Known for her zany sense of humor that combines old-fashioned slapstick with in-your-face social observations, Sierk is sure to send audience members away with a smile. That's My Booze, a routine by funny UD alumni, will take the stage from 10:30-11 p.m., at the Bacchus Theatre, in the Perkins Student Center. The troupe will riff on a first date gone awry, a friendly high school principal and other topics that bring laughter. A special SCPAB presentation of Sherrod Small, starting from midnight in Multipurpose Room A in the Trabant University Center, is sure to tickle funny bones and ease pre-semester jitters. Small, a regular on VH1's Best Week Ever, brought the house down on his last visit to UD and is back for an encore by popular demand.
A Whole New World, Sunday, Aug. 27

Set for 1:30-4:30 p.m., this three-hour diversity appreciation workshop sponsored by Residence Life will be offered at different locations across campus. (Students should check with resident assistants for their assigned workshop location.) Workshops, which feature hands-on activities, focus on community building and learning from the strengths of others.

Fall Student Activities Night, Monday, Aug. 28

Set for 7-9 p.m. in Multipurpose rooms A, B and C at the Trabant University Center and in the gyms of the Carpenter Sports Building, Fall Student Activities Night will give new students the opportunity to learn about more than 170 student organizations that appeal to interests ranging from environmentalism to student government to intramural sports. The annual event sponsored by UD Student Centers is an excellent way for students to gather information and meet like-minded peers before making a firm commitment about which groups to join. Attendance at both locations is highly recommended for students who want to get a full sampling of offerings.

Organizations that will be represented include student government, multicultural campus, student media, recreation, community service, club sports, cultural and performance, and fraternities and sororities. To see a complete list of student groups that will be represented at the event, go to [www.udel.edu/studentevents/2006_fallstuactnight.html].

For more information about Fall Student Activities Night, call (302) 831-0091.

All events are free and a great way for newcomers to meet friends, get involved and establish firm footing on campus before the start of the fall semester.
