Norman Wagner, Alvin B. and Julia O. Stiles Professor of Chemical Engineering, was featured in an Aug. 7 Business Week story about his liquid body armor discovery, which is being marketed by Armor Holdings Inc. The story also quoted Eric Wetzel, a UD alumnus who worked on the project as a scientist at the Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Md.

Ed Kee, crops specialist for the UD Cooperative Extension Service and an instructor in plant and soil sciences, was quoted in an Aug. 4 Cape Gazette story on the effects of the recent summer heat wave, particularly its impact on the state's corn and soybean crops.

Jonathan Lewis, senior psychologist with the UD Center for Counseling and Student Development, was quoted in an Aug. 3 News Journal story about high school graduates making the transition to their freshman year of college.

Laurence Kalkstein, senior research fellow in UD's Center for Climatic Research, was cited in an Aug. 2 News Journal story about the effects of heat on humans.

Joseph Pika, professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in an Aug. 2 News Journal story about Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean's visit to the state.

Linda Gottfredson, professor of education, was quoted in an Aug. 1 Village Voice story about life in the competitive world of organizations for people with high IQs.

Donald Sparks, S. Hallock du Pont Chair of Plant and Soil Sciences, was quoted in a widely circulated Aug. 1 United Press International story about the impact of human activities on the Earth's critical zone.

Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence, was quoted in an Aug. 1 Wall Street Journal story about modernization of the White House pressroom.

Alex Brown, instructor in marketing, was featured in an Aug. 1 Philadelphia Inquirer article about his blog on which race fans can keep tabs on the condition of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

Irene Davis, professor of physical therapy, was quoted in the August edition of Health magazine in an article on exercise.

Balaji Panchapakesan, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, was featured in a July 31 EE Times story about his research on carbon nanotubes.

George Basalla, professor emeritus of history, was cited in a July 30 Washington Times story about life in the universe.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a July 30 San Francisco Chronicle story about oil company executives and in a July 29 Los Angeles Times story about the Disney board.

James O'Neill, professor of economics and director of the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship, and Clinton Tymes, director of the Small Business Development Center, were quoted in a July 30 News Journal story about young entrepreneurs. O'Neill also was quoted in a July 29 News Journal story on a lack of venture capital projects in the state.

Alumni

Kevin Mench, former UD baseball player, was featured in a Sports Illustrated on average salaries in professional sports. Mench later made the news when he was traded from the Texas Rangers to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ryan Bonifacino, a 2005 UD graduate and founder of BOZMEDIA Group, an advertising and graphic arts agency in Wilmington, was quoted in a July 30 News Journal story about young entrepreneurs. Bonifacino and Tom Smith won first prize in the 2005 Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics business plan competition.
