Ben Patrick, UD graduate student and star tight end on the Fightin' Blue Hens football team, was featured in an April 27 Philadelphia Inquirer story about prospects for local scholar-athletes in the 2007 National Football League draft, which will be held Saturday and Sunday in New York City. Patrick is projected as a second- or third-round choice.

Meryl Gardner, associate professor of business administration, was quoted in an April 27 News Journal story about Aglient's creation of a demonstration laboratory in Delaware. "What we are seeing is relationship marketing," Gardner said. "You are showing your company in a very positive light and part of what a company buys when they buy a product in the business sector is reliability, knowledge, you want to make sure that when you order a machinery it's going to be there."

Amy Cowperthwaite, laboratory coordinator in the School of Nursing, and a number of students were quoted in an April 27 News Journal story about a disaster drill on campus.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in an April 26 Chicago Tribune story on Carl Icahn's fight for a seat on the Motorola board, in April 24 and 25 New York Times stories on The New York Times Co. annual meeting, in an April 13 Reuters story on Dow, in an April 11 Washington Post story about the Smithsonian board, in an April 10 Corporate Board Member story about directors and business travel and in an April 9 Wall Street Journal story on reduced rewards for corporate executives.

John Byrne, director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, was cited in an April 25 News Journal story on a state sustainable energy utility proposal and in an April 14 story on a decision that will allow Delaware to block a liquefied natural gas facility. Jeremy Firestone, assistant professor of marine and earth studies, also was cited in the April 14 story.

Louis Hirsh, director of admissions, was quoted in April 18 and April 24 USA Today stores about admissions practices in light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. “It's very, very tough to create a foolproof net” when screening prospective students, Hirsh said.

Cynthia Cummings, associate vice president of campus life, was quoted in an April 23 News Journal story about problem students on campus in light of the Virginia Tech killings.

Gordon Johnson, of the UD Cooperative Extension Service, was quoted in an April 23 News Journal story about challenges facing small farmers under federal organic farm regulations.

Dan Rich, UD provost, was quoted in an April 19 News Journal story about efforts in Delaware to close the gap between high school academic standards and expectations of colleges and universities.

Guy Alchon, associate professor of history, was quoted in the April 19 News Journal about a campus forum he sponsored that featured Vietnam and Iraq veterans.

Jeff Conrad, a UD student, was featured April 17 on National Public Radio in a story about the use of social networking sites in the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in an April 16 Fox News story about the political survival of Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf.

Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Professor of Law and Public Policy, wrote an opinion piece in the April 15 News Journal on Jackie Robinson and the integration of Major League Baseball.

Jeffrey A. Raffel, Charles P. Messick Chair of Public Administration and director of the School of Urban Affairs, was quoted in an April 15 News Journal story on busing.

Eric Kmiec, professor of biological sciences, was quoted in an April 15 News Journal story on the new company Orphagenix.

Carol Henderson Belton, associate professor of English and Black American Studies, was quoted in an April 13 News Journal story on the controversy surrounding comments made by radio host Don Imus about the Rutgers University women's basketball team. "What's disturbing about what he said is our society has gotten very comfortable at making these kinds of comments,” she said.

Ed Kee, of UD's Cooperative Extension Service, was quoted in an April 11 News Journal story about chilly weather and its potential to harm the peach crop.

Frederick Nelson, professor of geography, was quoted in an April 11 Nature (United Kingdom) story about climate change and the world's permafrost.

Lu Ann DeCunzo, professor of anthropology, was quoted in an April 10 News Journal story about historical finds along Choptank Road near Middletown.

UD's new hydrogen fuel cell-powered shuttle bus was featured widely following its unveiling April 9, with footage on WTXF-TV, WPVI-TV, WHYY-TV and Delaware Online, and a story in the News Journal. U.S. Sen. Thomas R. Carper (D-Del.) and Congressman Michael N. Castle (R-Del.) attended the ceremony. Ajay Prasad, professor of mechanical engineering, is principal investigator for the project, and co-principal investigators are Ardeshir Faghri, professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Delaware Center for Transportation, and Suresh Advani, George W. Laird Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
