5:12 p.m., April 25, 2007--After a lengthy investigation, Newark Police arrested Jonathan M. Coe, a junior at the University from Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and charged him with several counts of drug possession and intent to deliver.

Police executed a search warrant at 720 Academy St. (the Kappa Sigma fraternity house), where he lived.

He was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession with intent to deliver Schedule II narcotic (pills, Adderoll and Oxycontin), possession with intent to deliver Schedule IV narcotic (psilocybin-mushrooms), possession of a controlled substance within 300 feet of a park, maintaining a dwelling, drugs not in original container, possession of a Schedule II narcotic--oxycodone, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police seized 211.8 grams of marijuana, 12 grams of mushrooms, 25 various pills, U.S. currency and drug paraphernalia.

Coe was arraigned and incarcerated at the Howard Young Correctional Facility, in lieu of $20,250 bail.

Kappa Sigma releases statement on arrest

6:06 p.m., April 27, 2007--The Xi-Lambda Chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Delaware has issued a statement following the arrest of a chapter member, Jonathan M. Coe, a junior from Ronkonkoma, N.Y., on drug charges.

Coe lived in the chapter house at 720 Academy St., and was arrested and charged Wednesday by Newark Police.

Matthew Krane, chapter president and a junior at UD, said Kappa Sigma “was surprised and dismayed by charges placed against a member of the chapter for possession of drugs and controlled substances with the intent to distribute.

“We certainly do not condone any activities of this nature and have very strong policies that prohibit such behavior. Our chapter has and will continue to fully cooperate with the local authorities and University officials until this matter is concluded. We have absolutely nothing to hide and already have initiated our own expulsion charges against this individual,” Krane said.

Mitchell B. Wilson, executive director of the national fraternity, said, “The undergraduate officers and alumni volunteers at the chapter acted swiftly to address this situation, which reassures me of their commitment to Kappa Sigma’s core values. This incident is very atypical of the character upon which we have known this chapter to operate and we are confident the leadership of Kappa Sigma at UD is taking the appropriate measures to immediately address the situation.”

"Among our most pressing concerns will be finding out how this could have happened, and who else within the chapter may have been aware of the situation and helped concealed it from us. Those individuals will be dealt with in an equally swift fashion," Krane said.

The Xi-Lambda Chapter of Kappa Sigma was chartered on the University of Delaware campus in 1997 and has more than 70 members.
