Tsu-Wei Chou named AIAA fellow

Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering
4:41 p.m., Nov. 29, 2005--Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The grade of fellow is conferred on individuals who have made “notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.”

Chou will be recognized at ceremonies to be held in Washington, D.C., in April. He is the second member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering to be named an AIAA Fellow. Jack R. Vinson, H. Fletcher Brown Professor, achieved fellow status in 1992.

With the AIAA award, Chou has attained the grade of fellow in five professional organizations. The other four are the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Composites, the American Ceramic Society, and ASM International (the Materials Information Society).

“What is most notable about Professor Chou’s accomplishments is the breadth of his work,” Eric Kaler, dean of the College of Engineering, said. “He has done high-quality research and published in fields ranging from materials science to applied mechanics to physics. Most recently, he has been working in the areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.”

Chou joined the University of Delaware in 1969 and, with Vinson, taught the first composite materials course that year. He has published 50 book chapters and 230 refereed journal papers, and he has been the recipient of a number of honors and awards, including being recognized by ISI as a Highly Cited Researcher in the world. He is also a founding editor of the Journal of Composites Science and Technology, which recently celebrated its 20th year of publication with a special anniversary edition.
