New biotechnology fellowship deadline is June 15

4:57 p.m., May 12, 2006--UD has received a gift from the family of Preston C. Townsend Sr., in his honor and in memory of his accomplishments, to establish a fellowship in biotechnology.

Mr. Townsend graduated from UD in 1932 with a bachelor's degree from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and for many years, guided the development of the family agribusiness, Townsends Inc., the first vertically integrated poultry company in the United States.

The Preston C. Townsend Biotechnology Fellowship will support doctoral students actively involved in clinical life science research with an interest in educating others about science.

It consists of a stipend of $10,000 paid over the academic year and is renewable for a second year. Townsend Fellows are expected to participate in up to five scientific outreach events per year.

The Delaware Biotechnology Institute is administering the fellowship for doctoral students in the life sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Applications are now being taken online, with a Thursday, June 15, deadline. Interested students should complete the application at [www.dbi.udel.edu/career.html#Townsend].
