Delaware swimming recruits announced

11:34 a.m., May 25, 2006--The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving program will add 20 high school recruits for the 2006-07 season, Fightin' Blue Hens Head Coach John Hayman announced Thursday.

“This incoming freshman class is a very impressive group of swimmers and divers,” Hayman, who recently completed his 17th season as UD head coach, said. “We were fortunate enough to fill many of our open spots with some talented athletes that include state champions and U.S. Swimming national qualifiers, as well as several YMCA national finalists. We will be graduating only three swimmers (one woman and two men) this year so this incoming class should strengthen our team for another great season next year, as well as years to come.”

The recruiting class includes 13 men and seven women from eight states-Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois and Connecticut.

Joining the UD men's team will be Ben Blotner of Bethesda, Md., and Chevy Chase High School, diving; Michael Cancila of Broomall, Pa., and Cardinal O'Hara High School, freestyle and individual medley; Grady Carter of Newark High School, sprint freestyle; Scott Conklin of Naperville, Ill., and Nequa Valley High School, middle-distance freestyle; Brad Damtoft of Rochester, N.Y., and Irondequoit High School, freestyle and butterfly; Taggart “T.K.” Foulke of Worcester, Pa., and Methacton High School, freestyle; Thomas Gallagher of Long Island, N.Y., and Sachem High School, diving; Sam Hunter of Barrington (R.I.) High School, freestyle; Sam Mintz of Hillsborough (N.J.) High School, distance freestyle; Craig Offutt of Butler, Md., and Hereford High School, freestyle and backstroke; Ben Otto of Glastonbury (Conn.) High School, diving; Matt Rathbun of Long Valley, N.J., and Seton Hall Prep, breaststroke; and Matt Wilson of Macungie, Pa., and Emmaus High School, butterfly and sprint freestyle.

Joining the women's team will be Cecily Connell of Newark High School, distance freestyle; Gabrielle Di Pretoro of West Islip (N.Y.) High School, diving; Lisa Goyette of Manlius, N.Y., and Fayetteville-Manlius High School, diving; Rachel Green of Gaithersburg, Md., and Damascus High School, sprint freestyle; Jordan Hyman of Wilmington and Padua High School, all-around; Barbara McHale of Ridgefield (Conn.) High School, individual medley; and Heather Shultz of Emmaus (Pa.) High School, sprint freestyle.

Both UD teams are coming off successful seasons, the women's team finishing 11-2 and fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet and the men's team 4-8 and eighth in the CAA meet, its best finish since joining the conference in 2001-02.
