Profıs gown wins design excellence award

Prof. Orzada models “Rosebud,” a three-piece ensemble inspired by the elegant jackets and vests worn by men in the 18th Century.

10:30 a.m., May 23, 2006--The winning ways of fashions designed by Belinda Orzada, associate professor of fashion and apparel studies, have garnered several awards for her over the years.

Most recently, for the second year in a row, she received the Bernina Design Excellence Award in the Hobbs Bonded /Fibers Fashion Show segment at the 20th annual Quilt Show and Contest in Paducah, Ky.

“About four years ago, I was looking for ways to add variety to my designs and new places to exhibit them and turned to quilting,” Orzada, whose designs frequently feature handwork, such as embroidery, said.

“This year, I won the wearable quilting category with a three-piece ensemble of apricot silk/satin organza, called 'Rosebud.' I was inspired by the elegant jackets and vests men wore in the 18th Century and teamed a long-sleeved blouse and vest with a mermaid-style long, flounced skirt. I used rose motifs and edging motifs to embroider and quilt the gown,” Orzada said.

In 2005, Prof. Orzada won a design excellence award for “Persian Wrap,” inspired by the works of noted glassblower and artist Dale Chihuly.
She also hand-dyed the fabric herself using Brazil wood as a natural dye. “I enjoy experimenting with natural dyes. They are all different, as plants are exposed to different environments, such as soil and rainfall, and each time you are surprised at the results,” she said.

Last year, she won the wearable quilting fashion show design excellence award for “Persian Wrap,” inspired by the works of noted glassblower and artist Dale Chihuly, with a white full-circle skirt gown with border of decreasing sized ovals in apricot.

Orzada also received an honorable mention for a quilted jacket she designed for her son from the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza.

She has won several awards for her designs from the International Textiles and Apparel Association, the professional, educational organization of the field, including its Best of Fashion in 1998 and its Award for Excellence in Design Development Using Draping and second place in its Sulky Challenge, both in 2004.

Joining the faculty in 1994, Orzada is a graduate of the University of Georgia and received her master's degree from Louisiana State University and her doctorate from Florida State University.
