UD Online faculty honored 11:51 a.m., May 11, 2006--Five UD faculty members were recognized for their outstanding contributions to online instruction at UD's second annual Online Faculty Appreciation Reception held April 21 in Mechanical Hall. Robert Hunsperger, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the Distinguished Teaching Award for his efforts to further the quality of distance learning; Charlene Hamilton, professor emerita of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, received the Pioneer Award for her early development of distance-learning nutrition courses and her work with UD's online dietetic internship program; Richard Gearhart, professor of chemistry, received an Innovative Teaching Award for his use of the WebCT course environment; Susan Evans, an instructor in UD's School of Education, received an Innovative Teaching Award for her use of the Live Classroom technology; and Brian Miller, an assistant professor in UD's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, received an Innovative Teaching Award for his incorporation of new technology into his online classes. University Media Services, IT-User Services, Morris Library, the Office of the Registrar and University Bookstores also were recognized for their contributions to online education at the ceremony. UD's distance-learning program, UD Online, began as the FOCUS program in 1988. Over the past 18 years, it has extended educational opportunities beyond campus and expanded the range of course delivery options for on-campus students. Since its inception, UD Online has drawn students from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and 49 different countries. |
