Workshop on research funding online

4:58 p.m., May 22, 2006--A workshop, “Research Funding Online,” will be held from 10 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, June 20, in the Library Instruction Room (116A) within the Reference Room of the Morris Library. Presented by the University of Delaware Library, the workshop is part of the 2006 Summer Teaching, Learning and Technology sessions. Carol A. Rudisell, librarian in the Reference Department, is the instructor.

The workshop will focus on electronic resources that can be used to search for grants from private foundations, corporations, government agencies, public charities and other organizations, including strategies for searching such databases as the COS (Community of Science) Funding Opportunities database and FC Search: The Foundation Center's Database on CD-Rom.

COS, a web service used by 500,000 scientists and scholars worldwide at 1,600 institutions, provides access to more than 20,000 research grants in all fields of research, including the sciences, social sciences and humanities.

As members of COS, UD faculty and researchers have access to an international network that can be used to publicize research, collaborate with peers, find funding and conduct research online.

In addition to COS Funding Opportunities database, COS maintains the Expertise database, comprised of faculty research profiles.

It also offers the COS Funding Alert, a customized service that automatically sends e-mails to individual researchers, notifying them of new grants available in their specific fields.

The “Research Funding Online” workshop will demonstrate ways in which UD faculty can make optimal use of these COS services.

FC Search: The Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive listing of active U.S. foundation and corporate giving programs and their associated grants.

It includes more than 80,000 grant-maker records, as well as information on more than 300,000 individual grants awarded by the nation's largest funders. The database also includes links to the web sites of approximately 6,000 of the nation's top foundations, as well as more than 3,000 corporate web sites. Individual records provide in-depth program descriptions and application guidelines, and the database provides multiple ways of accessing appropriate funders.

The workshop is open to UD faculty, staff and students. Pre-registration is encouraged, as seating is limited. To register, go to [www.udel.edu/learn/usered/]. For questions, contact Carol Rudisell at (302) 831-6942.
