4:23 p.m., May 19, 2006--The College School chess team took the top prize in the School Award competition of the Delaware State Elementary School Chess Championship recently in which 75 elementary school students from 20 area schools participated.

UD's College School is a private elementary school on campus for children with learning differences.

Timmy Dunn, Billy Erb, A.J. Jones, Ryan Sternberg and Matthew Dunn comprised the team that competed in the May 7 tournament hosted by the Bernard and Ruth Siegel Jewish Community Center of Delaware.

In addition to the School Award, Timmy Dunn took first place in the 4th grade competition, and Jones was first-place winner in the fifth grade.

Josephine Fish, with the Hockessin Library Chess Club, coaches the College School team, and UD graduate student, Yi Song, a doctoral precandidate in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy who won the title Chinese Women's Chess Master at age 14, instructs the students every Wednesday. She teaches them strategy and helps hone their skills by engaging them in chess games.

“Everyone was very proud of the students for their sportsmanship and positive attitudes. We have the trophies from this championship on display at the College School,” Martha McDonough, administrative assistant, said.
