Chautauqua at Virden Center in mid-June

The Chautauqua Tent Show, a unique mixture of education and entertainment, will be held Sunday-Wednesday, June 18-21, under the big tent at the Virden Center on the UD campus in Lewes.

4:32 p.m., May 19, 2006--The eighth annual Chautauqua Tent Show, a unique mixture of education and entertainment, will be held Sunday-Wednesday, June 18-21, under the big tent at the Virden Center on the UD campus in Lewes.

This year's theme, “In the Beginning, Delaware: Lewes,” is in honor of the 375th anniversary of Lewes. The event will feature re-enactments of historical culture and characters accompanied by music. The schedule of events is listed below.

Sunday, June 18:

  • 2 p.m., “Pirate Shanties,” with presenters from the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, will sing traditional songs of the sea;
  • 3 p.m., reception in the Virden Center;
  • 4:30 p.m., “Colonial Games,” presented by Jim Rockwell of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, will highlight children's activities of the 17th Century; and
  • 7 p.m., “Henry Hudson,” explorer and captain of the Half Moon, portrayed by Steve Weisse of the New Netherland Museum.

Monday, June 19:

  • Noon, at the Lewes public dock, will feature special daytime programs with “The Little Key,” where kids can learn about maritime traditions; and
  • 7 p.m., “William Penn,” portrayed by Steve Gulick of the American Historical Theatre, will share his experiences as a Quaker and diplomat.

Tuesday, June 20:

  • Noon, at the Lewes public dock, will feature special daytime programs with “The Little Key”; and
  • 7 p.m., “Anne Bonny,” a notorious female pirate, portrayed by Karen Razler-Thek of the American Historical Theatre.

Wednesday, June 21:

  • Noon, at the Lewes public dock, will feature special daytime programs with “The Little Key”; and
  • 7 p.m., “Blackbeard,” one of history's most famous pirates, portrayed by Ben Cherry.
