Pittsburgh defeats UD in WNIT opening round

Melissa Czorniewy
10:52 a.m., March 20, 2006--In a hard-fought game that was close from start to finish, the host University of Pittsburgh defeated the University of Delaware 64-57 in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Fightin' Blue Hens ended the season with a record of 22-8.

“We played great today,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “We limited their offensive rebounds, and we had plenty of opportunities to score but just weren't able to knock down some shots when we needed to. Pittsburgh believed it should have been playing in the NCAA tournament and I certainly agree. We just have to go back to the drawing board, work hard, and hopefully we'll be in the NCAA tournament ourselves next year.”

The Hens were led by sophomore guard Melissa Czorniewy, who had a game-high 21 points, and junior guard Tyresa Smith, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Smith also scored her 1,000th career point.

UD will return its complete starting lineup in 2006-07, when the Hens will host the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament. Joining the current starters, who also include forwards Chrissy Fisher and Courtney Irving and point guard Alena Koshansky, will be transfer guards Kyle DeHaven of the College of William & Mary and Jamie Mundy of Georgetown University and forward Kristina Gineitis of George Washington University.

Three other CAA women's basketball teams were involved in tournament action over the weekend. Conference champion Old Dominion University was knocked out of the NCAA tournament by George Washington University, 87-72. In other WNIT action, Villanova University defeated Hofstra University 71-46 and the University of North Carolina Charlotte defeated James Madison University 70-62.
