Summer College deadlines are near

3:57 p.m., March 29, 2006--Qualified high school students can experience campus life firsthand and earn college credits at UD's Summer College, now in its 23rd year. Administered by the University Honors Program and held from July 8-Aug. 12, Summer College offers an opportunity for students entering their junior or senior years to get a head start on their college careers, according to the program coordinator, Chuck Shermeyer.

The deadline for Summer College applications is Monday, May 1, and the deadline for financial aid applications is Monday, April 17. To be considered for financial aid, students must submit a completed Summer College application, including an application form, references, transcripts, PSAT/SAT scores and the financial aid application.

Summer College costs $2,200 for Delaware residents and $4,600 for nonresidents, plus a $50 application fee.

UD faculty and staff can use their tuition fee waiver benefit to substantially reduce the cost of Summer College.

For more information on Summer College, financial aid applications and tuition waivers, call (302) 831-6560, send e-mail to [summercollege@udel.edu] or visit [www.udel.edu/summercollege].

Students can take up to seven credit hours and choose from core courses in philosophy, English, math, communications, political science and a one-credit course in steel drum band, or they may chose from second summer-session courses. All courses are still open but that may change by mid-April, Shermeyer said, and he encourages students to apply as soon as possible to ensure getting into the classes of their choice. The credits will go on a UD transcript, and, in most cases, can be transferred to other institutions.

Life outside of the classroom is fun and exciting, as well, with several extracurricular activities planned, Shermeyer said. There will be day trips to cities such as New York, tubing on the Brandywine River and a day at Rehoboth Beach. Weekday activities may include comedy programs, foreign films, athletic contests, career exploration programs, games and other events.

Students will be housed in well-supervised campus residence halls that are locked 24 hours a day.

“For many years, Summer College has successfully introduced high school students to campus life and learning, and this year we are offering the opportunity to attend to rising juniors as well as seniors and offering more courses,” Shermeyer said. “The feedback from former students has been very positive with students reporting that Summer College was a worthwhile and enjoyable experience in itself and made the transition to college easier and smoother.”
