Sexual Assault Awareness Month events set
Organized by UD's Office of Women's Affairs, the programs and events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The SAAM film series begins with Rosita, the story of a nine-year-old Nicaraguan girl who was raped and impregnated on the way to school, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Jessi LaCosta will discuss her abduction and sexual assault as a 16-year-old, One Survivor's Journey of Healing, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, in 115 Purnell Hall. On Thursday, April 6, survivors and supports are encouraged to wear teal shirts to mark National Day to End Sexual Violence. At 6 p.m., in 209-11 Trabant University Center, a discussion group with facilitators is open for anyone to discuss their experiences with any form of sexual violence. This event is open to the UD community only. Graduate student Terry Lilley will facilitate Moving beyond 'No Means No,' Talking About What Means 'Yes': Sexual Assault Prevention for Women and Men, at 8 p.m., Monday, April 10, in the Baccus Theatre of the Perkins Student Center. The program will address ways to protect against and prevent sexual assault. Amal Abusroar will lecture on Women and the Patriarchal System in Palestine, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center. The Student Centers Programming Advisory Board will screen the film North Country at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Robert Jensen, professor at the University of Texas at Austin, will lecture on Pornography and the Sexual Objectification of Women, at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 13, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. The National Organization of Men's Outreach for Rape Education presents The One in Four RV Tour: What Men Can Do, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., Monday, April 17, in Multipurpose Rooms A and B of the Trabant University Center. The film A Date with Darkness: The Trial and Capture of Andrew Lustor will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Carol Henderson Belton, associate professor of English, will lecture on Hooches and Whores: Hip-Hop and the Crisis in Young Black Womanhood, from 12:20-1:10 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, in 116 Gore Hall. Janet Jakobsen, professor at Barnard College, will lecture on The Value of Freedom: War, Sexual Violence and Ethics at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, in 104 Gore Hall. Kick the Silence Kickball Tournament, cosponsored by Phi Sigma Pi, Students Acting for Gender Equality and Men Against Rape Society, will raise money for the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 22, on Frazier Field behind the Carpenter Sports Building. A Walk in my Shoes display and march from Kent General Hospital to Legislative Hall in Dover at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 22. Sponsored by the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware and CONTACT Delaware, the march is a national campaign to promote the awareness and prevention of sexual violence. Graduate students Kelly Ferguson, Christine Motta, Carrie Rust, and Emily Smith will present Friend or Foe? What Your Facebook Profile Says About You, at 7 p.m., Monday, April 24, in the Trabant University Theatre. The films Killing Us Softly 3 and The Media and Women will be shown starting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, in the Trabant University Theatre. Karen Tsukada, assistant professor of individual and family studies and a psychologist in UD's Center for Counseling and Student Development, will lead a workshop after the film. The Delaware Victims' Rights Task Force will sponsor the 15th annual Victims' Tribute at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, at the Modern Maturity Cener on Forrest Avenue in Dover. Students Acting for Gender Equality will lead the annual Take Back the Night March and Speak Out rally starting at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 27, at the steps at Old College. Participants will march across campus to the Rodney Room in Perkins Student Center.
