Police investigate robbery at student apartment

6:05 p.m., March 24, 2006--Newark Police are investigating a robbery that occurred around 1 a.m., Friday, March 24, in the apartment of five students at School Lane Apartments on Scholar Drive in Newark.

A female student observed an unknown male intruder inside the apartment, and a roommate activated the panic alarm. The five occupants of the apartment locked themselves in their rooms until police arrived less than six minutes later. A search of the apartment revealed that the suspect had already fled the area. Further investigation revealed that he had gained entry by prying open and breaking an exterior window of an unoccupied bedroom. A digital camera and jewelry valued at nearly $1,000 were stolen. None of the occupants of the apartment were harmed.

Newark officers were assisted in the search by a canine team from New Castle County Police.

The suspect is described as 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing more than 200 pounds, with a large build. He was wearing light-colored jeans and a knit hat and had a backpack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Scott Rieger at (302) 366-7110, ext. 133, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
