'Pain Management at the End of Life' set April 5

4:56 p.m., March 23, 2006--UD will host a webcast/teleconference program on pain management at the end of life from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, in the Clayton Hall Conference Center. Registration deadline is Thursday, March 30, and continuing education contact hours are available.

The daylong forum for professionals and community members examines the gap between knowledge and the application of effective pain control in patients with terminal conditions with leading researchers and practitioners currently working in pain management.

The morning program, from 8 a.m.-noon, presented by the WHYY Wider Horizons Caring Community, is a webcast featuring moderator, Terry Maxwell, a nurse and director of research for excelleRx, a medication-management company, and a panel of experts who will discuss the clinical management of pain at the end of life and alternative approaches to pain management.

The 1:30-4 p.m. session features the Hospice Foundation of America's 13th annual National Bereavement Teleconference focusing on “Pain Management at the End of Life,” presented by UD's College of Health Sciences Division of Special Programs.

It examines the gap between the knowledge and application of effective pain control, including pharmaceutical, psychosocial, spiritual and complementary aspects of pain management.

Frank Sesno, professor of public policy and communication at George Mason University and special correspondent for CNN, will moderate a panel of ethicists, educators and hospice experts who will look at laws and regulations that hinder the practice of pain management.

Cosponsoring both sessions are UD, Delaware Hospice, Delaware End-of-Life Coalition, Delaware Pain Initiative and Quality Insights of Delaware.
