Polymers expert to deliver Nowinski Lecture 9 a.m., March 22, 2006--Mary Boyce, professor of mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology will deliver the Department of Mechanical Engineering's annual Jerzy L. Nowinski Lecture at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 24, in room 106 of the Center for Composite Materials. Boyce will discuss the Mechanics of High-Rate Deformation of Amorphous Polymers. The mechanics of polymeric materials under conditions of high-rate loading has garnered increasing interest in recent years due to the potential role of polymers in ballistic and blast protection materials and systems. Boyce conducts research in the field of mechanics of materials with an emphasis on the physics of polymer deformation. She graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and received her master's and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Boyce began teaching at MIT in 1987 and has been a distinguished alumnae professor of mechanical engineering since 2000. The lectureship, which began in 1975, honors the late Jerzy L. Nowinski for his contributions to the field of applied mechanics. He served as Fletcher Brown Professor in mechanical engineering and later in mechanical and aerospace engineering from 1961-73. In 1999, a Nowinski symposium was held to honor him on his 94th birthday. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the Polytechnic Institute of Warsaw. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Betty Bonavita of the mechanical engineering department at (302) 831-6975. Article by Rachel Cirone, AS '06 |
