Rising sea level subject of Thursday lecture

9:04 a.m., March 7, 2006--Orrin Pilkey, of Duke University, will give a talk on “The Future of Our Shorelines In a Time of Rising Sea Level” at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 9, in 206 Robinson Hall. Hosted by UD's Department of Geology and the College of Marine Studies, the lecture is free and open to the public.

Pilkey, who is James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Geology and Director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Duke University, will speak about the present state of global shorelines, particularly fragile barrier islands and the impacts of storms and sea level rise on the future of the coast. He also will discuss efforts to prevent erosion and coastal retreat.

An expert on beach behavior, beach replenishment processes and shoreline stabilization, Pilkey has won research funding from the National Geographic Society, U.S. Geological Survey and the National Science Foundation.
