Alumni enliven multi-ethnic career conference

Warren Woods, manager of the DuPont Company's finance and accounting division
3:48 p.m., March 17, 2006--About 125 persons attended the 19th annual Multi-ethnic Career Development Conference held March 11 in the Trabant University Center.

The conference, with its theme of “The Real World: Prepare For Your Global Future,” afforded freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to meet recent alumni and to learn how to build a successful career by using the many resources available at UD.

The event was sponsored by the MBNA Career Services Center, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Center for Black Culture, NUCLEUS, RISE, the Excel Program, the Black Leadership Council, the Cultural Programming Advisory Board, the Black Student Union and HOLA.

Warren Woods, manager of the DuPont Company's finance and accounting division, and Guillermina Gonzalez-Sobrero, president of Quixote Marketing, LLC, located in Wilmington, were the featured speakers.

Freshmen and sophomores at the conference get a chance to meet recent alumni and learn how to build successful careers.
Joyce Dennis Henderson, assistant director of the MBNA Career Services Center, said that the students were engaged by the issues raised by the speakers and the alumni panels.

“Mr. Woods emphasized strong academics as well as a strong support system as keys for personal success,” Henderson said. “Ms. Gonzalez-Sobrero encouraged students to develop cross-cultural skills as a major criterion for success in an increasingly interconnected globalized business world. She also said executives need to keep in perspective their own personal values in order to have the ability to learn from other cultures, to adapt the best practices and to communicate effectively.”

Topics discussed by alumni panels included:

Members of an alumni panel offer their perspectives on career development.
  • How to market yourself--what makes you unique;
  • Lead and not follow--develop leadership skills;
  • Graduate school--prepare now; and
  • Navigating a diverse workplace--building multi-cultural relationships.

“Students attending the fair enjoyed the panel discussions,” Henderson said. “They also liked the opportunity to interact with and ask UD alumni about what to expect and how to prepare for real world career experience.”
