UD Men's Rowing Club wins Eastern invitation

9:20 a.m., March 23, 2006--The University of Delaware Men's Rowing Club has announced that its lightweight crews have been invited to compete at the prestigious Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges spring championship regatta to be held Sunday, May 21, in Worcester, Mass. The invitation was extended to the team after an impressive showing Saturday, March 18, in a race-off against the College of the Holy Cross.

UD's first and second varsity lightweight boats and freshmen lightweight boat competed against the Holy Cross varsity lightweight boat. The first varsity boat finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:58.6, 12 seconds ahead of Holy Cross, while the second varsity boat finished in 6:02.3, more than eight seconds ahead of Holy Cross. In addition, the freshmen lightweight boat showed the strength and depth of UD's program as they raced to a tie with Holy Cross.

The varsity heavyweight boats also had a good showing against the Holy Cross heavyweights. Racing an acclaimed and nationally ranked heavyweight crew, UD remained in contact with the Holy Cross boat and finished in a time of 6:09.6, only three seconds behind Holy Cross. The second varsity heavyweight boat also did well, finishing in 6:27.8 against the Holy Cross second varsity eight.

The UD Men's Rowing Club members, both lightweights and heavyweights, will be attending spring training at Cocoa Beach, Fla., during the last week of March to prepare for championship and dual regattas in April and May. UD's lightweight crews will then be competing against Dartmouth, Harvard and Georgetown in Mercer, N.J., on April 8-9. The heavyweight crews will be racing at the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J., on Saturday, April 8.
