Capital punishment debate April 3 at UD 3:36 p.m., March 20, 2006--Delaware state prosecutor Steven Wood and Jeffrey Reiman, professor of philosophy at American University, will debate the use of capital punishment at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 3, in Mitchell Hall. The debate, Should We Be Using Capital Punishment in the 21st Century? is part of the Great Debate Series sponsored by the Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics Program. Issues to be discussed include lethal injection, the morality of capital punishment and alternatives. Wood has litigated high-profile cases in Delaware, including Thomas Capano's trial for the 1996 murder of Anne Marie Fahey. Reiman, an expert on criminal justice, is the author of several books, including The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison. UD students are encouraged to enter an essay contest with $1,200 in prize money. Students must choose a point of view in the debates, defend it and submit up to 10 pages on the subject. Contest entry forms will be available at the debate. For more information, visit [www.dbi.udel.edu/ethics.html]. Article by Julia Parmley, AS 07 |
