UD women's basketball prepares for CAA play

11:44 a.m., March 7, 2006--The third-seeded University of Delaware women's basketball team is preparing to open Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament play at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 9, at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Head Coach Tina Martin's Fightin' Blue Hens, who finished the regular season 21-6, earned an opening round bye and will take on the winner of Wednesday's game between the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Northeastern University. The Hens swept two regular season games against Northeastern and split with UNC Wilmington.

If UD advances to the semifinals, it would play at 5 p.m., Friday, March 10, against second-seeded James Madison University, Drexel University or Towson University. Drexel and Towson will meet in the first round on Wednesday for the right to take on James Madison.

Playing on the other side of the bracket are top-seeded Old Dominion University and fourth-seeded Hofstra University. Hofstra will play the winner of Wednesday's game between the College of William & Mary and Georgia State University and Old Dominion will meet the winner of the game between George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The championship game will be played at noon Saturday, March 11. UD reached the 2005 championship game, falling in overtime to Old Dominion

The 2006 Hens are led by junior guards Tyresa Smith and Alena Koshansky, sophomore guard Melissa Czorniewy and junior forward Chrissy Fisher.

All UD games can be heard live on The Ticket AM 1290 and on WVUD-FM 91.3. The CAA also is providing live webcasts of the tournament games. For details or to subscribe, go to [www.collegesportsdirect.tv/caa].
