Blue Hen baseball team defeats St. Joe's, 14-4

Alex Buchholz hit a grand slam to lift the Hens.
9:34 a.m., March 15, 2006--A sixth-inning grand slam by freshman Alex Buchholz blew open a close game and helped lift the University of Delaware baseball team to a 14-4 victory over host St. Joseph's University on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 9-3 as they prepare for their first Colonial Athletic Association series of the young season. The Hens will travel to James Madison University for games Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In Tuesday's game, UD fell behind 3-1 through the fourth inning but exploded for three runs in the fifth and seven more in the six.

In addition to the grand slam by Buchholz, UD got home runs from Todd Davison, Adam Tsakonas and Ryan Engelhardt. Shortstop Kyle Davis had three hits, including a pair of doubles.

Senior righthander Rob Bergman, who also played football for UD, got the start for the Hens. He allowed four hits and two runs over 3.1 innings of action. Freshman Steve Miklas came on in relief to earn the win in his debut.
