Marist baseball team takes weekend series

Todd Davison
10:59 a.m., March 13, 2006--Marist College took two of three games in a weekend baseball series against the University of Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium.

UD lost the opener on Friday 18-16 as Marist rallied from behind in the late innings. The Hens won 12-8 on Saturday and then fell 9-8 on Sunday.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 8-3 on the season as they prepare for a road game at St. Joseph's University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 14. UD will open Colonial Athletic Association play at James Madison University with a series March 17-19 in Harrisonburg, Va.

In Friday's game, UD had a 16-9 lead entering the eighth inning but was unable to hold on for the win as the visitors scored nine runs, four of which were earned, off reliever Billy Harris, who took the loss. The Hens got home runs from centerfielder Brandon Menchaca, who drove in four runs, catcher Bill Merkler and first baseman Dan Kozek. Shortstop Todd Davison had four hits, including a double and a triple.

On Saturday, UD got off to a strong start with five runs in the first inning to power past Marist. Pitcher Todd Ozog got the win and the Hens got home runs from leftfielder Bryan Hagerich, Kozek and catcher Ryan Engelhardt.

On Sunday, Marist took a 9-5 lead and a UD rally fell just short. Kevin Brown suffered the loss for the Hens. Second baseman Alex Buchholz, rightfielder Dan Richardson and Menchaca had two hits each.
