Delaware baseball team muscles way past Rider

Kevin Brown
10:03 a.m., March 9, 2006--The University of Delaware baseball team hit four home runs to power its way past Rider University 6-5 in a game played Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Hitting home runs for the Fightin' Blue Hens were Alex Buchholz, Scott Shockley, Bill Merkler and Brandon Menchaca, who also had a double.

Kevin Brown started and went seven innings for the Hens, allowing just two hits and two runs for the win. Evan Bowen and Matt Heppner worked one inning each for UD.

The Hens are now 7-1 on the season as they prepare for a three-game weekend series against Marist College at Bob Hannah Stadium. Games will be played at 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 10, at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 11, and at noon, Sunday, March 12.

UD will take to the road for a game at St. Joseph's University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, and will open Colonial Athletic Association play at James Madison University March 17-19.

UD junior lefthanded pitcher Mitch Heckert will miss the remainder of the season after surgery to repair ligament damage to his left elbow. He injured the elbow during the Feb. 25 loss to the University of Richmond.
