Blue Hen baseball defeats St. Joseph's

Ryan Jablonski
9:58 a.m., March 2, 2006--The University of Delaware baseball team jumped out to an early lead and held off St. Joseph's University for a 9-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

With the victory, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 3-1 on the season. They now prepare for a three-game weekend series at home against the University of Vermont, as the teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, March 4, and a single game beginning at noon, Sunday, March 5.

In Wednesday's victory, the Hens jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when junior first baseman Ryan Jablonski lined a two-run single up the middle to score Adam Tsakonas and Bryan Hagerich. The Hens scored two more in the third when Brandon Menchaca hit a two-run single. Menchaca then doubled in the fifth to give the Hens a 5-1 lead.

St. Joseph's cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the sixth but UD bounced back in the bottom half of the inning to stretch the lead to 9-4. Jablonski led off with a triple, followed by a double by designated hitter Scott Shockley. Two batters later, Todd Davison homered to left to put the Hens up 8-4. After Tsakonas reached on an error, Hagerich drove him home with a triple to provide the final margin.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kevin Brown allowed just one run and struck out four batters in four innings of work to earn the win for UD. After a short stint by Rob Bergman, Evan Bowen and Chad Kerfoot combined for four innings of scoreless relief to secure the victory.

Hagerich led the Hens with three hits, Menchaca drove in three runs and Tsakonas scored three runs.
