16 Transformation Grants awarded to faculty

1:40 p.m., June 23, 2006--The College of Arts and Sciences has awarded 16 first-time-ever Transformation Grants to faculty members for a variety of student-centered projects. Funded by the Unidel Foundation, the two-year grants are intended to increase the transformational potential of the college for students in many areas, including undergraduate research, service learning, internationalization, problem-based learning, diversity, assessment and ethics.

“These projects will provide life-changing transformational experiences for our students,” Tom Apple, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said. “We want these projects to enhance our students cultural and global awareness and stir their passions for research and service to the community.”

Award recipients include:

  • Patricia Sloane-White, assistant professor of anthropology, for “Young, Privileged and Global: American and Malaysian Dimensions of University Life,” $11,000;
  • Yasser Payne, assistant professor of Black American Studies, and James Jones, director of the Black American Studies Program and professor of psychology, for “The Lived Experiences of Black Students and Faculty at the University of Delaware,” $25,000;
  • Mary Farach-Carson, professor of biological sciences, and Zohra Ali-Kahn Catts, adult genetics counselor at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, for “Exploring a Career in Cancer Genetics with the Family Cancer Risk Registry,” $25,000;
  • Kathryn Scantlebury, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, for “Expanding Research Opportunities and Experiences in Science Education,” $24,880;
  • Paul Amer, professor, Lori Pollock, professor, both computer and information sciences, and Chandra Reedy, professor of museum studies, for “Computing Museum Research Project,” $25,000;
  • Christopher Rasmussen, assistant professor, Jingyi Yu, assistant professor, both computer and information sciences, and Lance Winn, assistant professor of art, for “Building An Immersive, Interaction Display for Smith Hall,” $25,000;
  • James Dean, professor, and Matthew Kinservik, associate professor, both English, for “English Studies Collaborative Research Program,” $25,000;
  • Melissa Ianetta, assistant professor of English, for “Peer Tutoring Program,” $25,000;
  • Gabriella Finzio, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, Thomas McCone, director, foreign languages and literatures, and Rae Stabosz, CITA III, foreign languages and literatures, for “Italian: Crossroad of Cultures,” $8,658;
  • Barry Joyce, associate professor of history, for “Graduate Studies Field Research in the American Southwest,” $19,000;
  • Peter Cole, professor of linguistics and acting director, Cognitive Science Program, for “Graduate and Undergraduate Field Research in Linguistics and Cognitive Science,” $25,000;
  • Jinfa Cai, professor of mathematical sciences, Nancy Campbell, graduate, doctoral precandidate, College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, Beth Anne Gluck, associate director, admissions, for “Peer Mentoring as a Means for Fostering Smooth Transition of Students from Delaware Technical Community College's Associate Degree Program to the University of Delaware,” $9,960;
  • Suzanne Burton, assistant professor of music, for “Understanding Emergent Musical Development,” $25,000;
  • Katherin Rogers, associate professor of philosophy, for “Professional Development Project,” $25,000;
  • Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, for “Constructive Inter-Civilizational Dialogue for Transformative Change,” $25,000; and
  • Lana Harrison, professor of sociology and Kathryn Denhardt, associate professor, urban affairs, for “Street Outreach,” $24,996.

Gretchen Bauer, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, chaired the selection panel, which included: Joann Browning, professor of theatre; Jorge Cubillos, associate professor, foreign languages and literatures; Marie Laberge, assistant professor, women's studies; Erica Armstrong Dunbar, assistant professor of history; Robert Hodson, associate professor of biological sciences; and April Veness, associate professor of geography.
