Five Blue Hen rowers honored by CRCA
9:26 a.m., June 2, 2006--Five members of the University of Delaware women's rowing team have been selected to the 2006 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete Team. Seniors Lane Kohl and Cathy Savarese, juniors Kenna Plangemann and Laura Beaufort, and sophomore Justine Strausser were among 44 rowers from the Mid-Atlantic Region and 135 overall to earn national honors. The competitors helped lead UD to the Colonial Athletic Association team championship in April, the team's fourth conference title in the last five years. All five were mainstays on the varsity eights boat that captured the CAA title, advanced to the second round of the Dad Vail Regatta and finished fourth in the petite finals at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Championships. The CRCA team honors scholar-athletes with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The University of Central Florida had the most honorees with six, followed by UD, Clemson University, the University of Rhode Island, Villanova University and Yale University with five selections each. Kohl has a 3.796 grade point average as an exercise science major with a minor in strength and conditioning and biological sciences. The three-year letter winner was named to the CRCA team for the third year and is also a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America nominee. Savarese has a 3.851 grade point average as an exercise physiology major with a minor in nutrition and strength and conditioning. She is a two-year letter winner. Plangemann has a 3.730 grade point average as a political science and history major. She is a two-year letter winner. Beaufort has a 3.614 grade point average as a political science major with minors in history and computer science. A three-year letter winner, she was named to the CRCA team for the second time. Strausser has a 3.617 grade point average as a biological sciences major with minors in chemistry and French. She is a two-year letter winner. |
