Runner Kevin DuPrey CoSIDA All-Academic
9:32 a.m., June 8, 2006--University of Delaware senior distance runner Kevin DuPrey has been selected first-team College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic for cross country and track and field DuPrey was one of 10 scholar-athletes honored on the first team, and now advances to the national ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-American team. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I institutions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. DuPrey, a biological sciences major whose athletic career was slowed by Lyme disease, graduated in May with a 3.88 grade point average. This fall, he will attend the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he hopes to study sports medicine or infectious disease DuPrey was a four-year letter winner in cross country and a two-year letter winner in outdoor track and field for the Fightin' Blue Hens. As a freshman, he was among UD's top runners, finishing 18th overall at the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet and setting a freshman record in the 10,000-meter run in track and field. DuPrey then contracted Lyme disease, and, although the disease slowed him, he continued to compete. In May, DuPrey was awarded the CAA's John H. Randolph Award, which recognizes individuals who through strength of character and human spirit serve as an inspiration to all to maximize their potential and ability for success. DuPrey is the fifth UD scholar-athlete to earn District 2 All-Academic honors this year, joining distance runner Allison Behrle, football player Tom Parks and soccer players Jennifer Krepps and Matt Haney. |
