Jan. 10, 2006--Lori Lewis Schipper, 48, agribusiness journalist, died from mesothelioma at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., on Dec. 26.
Mrs. Schipper wrote for a number of agriculture publications. She was editor of Flue Cured Tobacco Farmer and Burley Tobacco Farmer and was the U.S. correspondent for Tobacco Journal International.
She received a masters in journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia and a masters degree from the University of Delaware in international relations. She was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, International Association of Business Communicators, Virginia Agribusiness Council and the vice president of the North Carolina Farm Writers and Broadcasters.
She loved travel, adventure and the unknown. She was active with People to People--traveling to Cambodia, Vietnam and Cuba as an educator and goodwill ambassador. She was always learning and encouraged others to continue to learn. She set up a scholarship at Temple University to foster investigative reporting on health and the environment.
Mrs. Schipper is survived by her husband, Paul Schipper of Arlington, Va.; her parents, Charles and Gayle Lewis of Shannon, Va.; her brother, Edward Lewis of Boerne, Texas; and seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at Red Springs Presbyterian Church. Donations in memory of Lori L. Schipper may be made to the American Cancer Society--Other Cancer Research, 124 Park St. SE, Vienna, VA 22180.
