Winter Commencement facts

5:25 p.m., Jan. 7, 2006--Although Winter Commencement takes place in the new year, the latest graduates are officially members of the Class of 2005, since they completed their degree requirements in August and December. In all, 1,300 degrees were conferred Jan. 7, including 143 doctoral degrees, 317 master’s degrees, 837 bachelor’s degrees and 3 associate degrees.

Winter Commencement facts

  • Graduates represent 32 states and 36 foreign countries. The top five states with the most graduates are, in descending order, Delaware (with 590 students), Pennsylvania (149), New Jersey (137), New York (86) and Maryland (79) The top foreign nations, in descending order, are China (with 35 students), India (32) and South Korea (18);
  • The most popular female name is Jennifer, the most popular male name is Michael and the most popular family names are Williams (6), Anderson (6), Brown (5), Davis (5), Smith (5), Johnson (5), Thompson (5) and King (5); and
  • The flags on stage at the ceremony celebrate the American states and territories--and more than 100 foreign countries--represented among UD’s student body. The presentation of flags pays tribute to University benefactor Pierre S. du Pont, who played a leadership role in establishing the University’s study abroad program--the first program of its kind in the world. Du Pont Hall is named in his honor. UD is ranked first in study abroad participation among the nation’s public institutions of higher education.
