Six grad students win science awards 4:32 p.m., Jan. 6, 2006--Three women doctoral students in psychology and three in biological sciences have received Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Future Faculty Development Awards. The three recipients in psychology are Ronnie Rubin, whose adviser is Julie Hubbard, associate professor; Erin Yeagley, whose adviser is David M. Kuhlman, associate professor; and Kimberly Dasch, whose adviser is Lawrence Cohen, professor. The three recipients in biological sciences are Genevieve Griffiths, whose adviser is Patricia DeLeon, professor; Vesi Cooke, whose adviser is Ulhas Naik, associate professor; and Neeraja Dharmaraj, whose adviser is Trustees Distinguished Professor Daniel Carson. Last year, the WISE subcommittee of UDs Commission on the Status of Women honored exemplary efforts and success in attracting and hiring women faculty in science and engineering by establishing the WISE Future Faculty Development awards of $5,000 for academic units. This year, the College of Arts and Sciences contributed $5,000 to each honored department. The psychology department added $10,000 to give three $5,000 awards, and the biology department added $5,000 to give awards to three students. The awards can be used to augment student stipends, for professional travel and for leadership and professional development. The WISE Future Faculty Development Awards were created in response to a charge from UD President David Roselle to determine current best practices for improving female faculty representation in science and engineering. |
