Symposium on student engagement in learning

3:11 p.m., Dec. 8, 2005--UD’s Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education is hosting a symposium, “Pedagogies of Engagement,” focusing on student engagement and assessment of learning, from Jan. 18-20, in place of its traditional workshop on problem-based learning (PBL). There is no registration fee required for UD participants.

A wide range of topics will be discussed with plenary sessions on “Writing for Student Engagement,” “Engaging Students: Influence on Student Learning” and “Engagement through Collaboration and Assessment.”

Participants from off-campus include Paul Anderson and Phillip Cottell, both of Miami University, and Edward Deckard of North Dakota State University.

In addition, Guido Geerts, associate professor, and Winnie Scott and Mark Serva, assistant professors, all of accounting and management information systems, will present a session on “Engaging Students through Emerging Technologies.”

Also included in the symposium will be a demonstration of problem-based learning and modeling of ways that PBL can be used effectively in undergraduate education.
