Proposals invited for teaching conference

4:45 p.m., Dec. 8, 2005--“Learning So Everyone Teaches” is the theme of the 2006 Lilly-East Conference on college and university teaching, Friday-Saturday, April 7-8, hosted by UD at Clayton Hall and cosponsored by Towson University. The deadline for proposals for presentations is Monday, Jan. 16.

Lilly Conferences bring together faculty from different disciplines and types of academic institutions and provide a forum for demonstrating, modeling and discussing innovative teaching practices at the university level.

Besides bringing nationally recognized experts on teaching in higher education to campus, the conference also provides a forum for UD faculty to share innovative teaching practices and research on teaching with colleagues from East Coast institutions, according to Gabriele Bauer, assistant director of UD’s Center for Teaching Effectiveness and coordinator of the conference.

Bauer encourages faculty to submit proposals for 45-minute concurrent sessions, 90-minute concurrent sessions and exemplary practice poster sessions. Presenters must register for the conference before submitting proposals, which may focus on research, pedagogical practice and issues of value to both junior and senior faculty. Proposals should be submitted electronically to [www.udel.edu/lillyeast/proposal/index.html] by the Jan. 16 deadline.

UD faculty attending the Lilly-East Conference will receive a 90 percent supplement of the $375 registration fee by the University and pay only $37.50 per faculty member. The payment is due at the time of registration.

The featured presenters from UD include Deborah Allen, associate professor biological sciences; George Watson, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Unidel Professor of Physics and Astronomy; and Hal White, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Other presenters are Virginia Anderson, professor of biological sciences, Towson University; Ron Berk, professor of biostatistics and measurement, School of Nursing, The Johns Hopkins University; Milton Cox, director for the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, Miami University of Ohio; Neil Davidson, Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, professor emeritus of curriculum and instruction, University of Maryland, College Park; Darby Lewes, professor of English, Lycoming College; Luz Mangurian, professor emeritus of biological sciences, Towson University; Barbara Millis, director of the Excellence in Teaching Program, University of Nevada, Reno; Linda Suskie, executive associate director, Middle States Commission on Higher Education; and Todd Zakrajsek, director of Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching, Central Michigan University.
