Terry Whittaker, assistant provost for student diversity and success, was quoted in a Dec. 16 News Journal story about a partnership between UD and the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League that is working to encourage more minority students to become teachers. The partnership is called the Achievement Matters Teaching Fellows Program.

Alan Fox, associate professor of philosophy, was quoted in a Dec. 16 News Journal story about the history of ceremonies develop around the cycles of the sun.

Debra Hess Norris, Henry Francis du Pont Chair in Fine Arts, was quoted in a front page story in the Dec. 15 Philadelphia Inquirer concerning efforts by art conservators from UD and Winterthur Museum & Country Estate to restore artwork and artifacts damaged when Hurricane Katrina roared through the Gulf Coast states. Accompanying the story was a photograph of Joyce Hill Stoner, professor of art conservation.

Peter Feng, associate professor of English, was quoted in a Dec. 14 Chicago Tribune story about concerns over stereotypes with the release of the film Memoirs of a Geisha.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, wrote an op-ed piece on the Muslim communities in Belgium and the United States for the Dec. 14 News Journal. Khan also was quoted in a Dec. 13 News Journal story about plans for Iraq discussed by President George W. Bush.

Joel Best, chairperson of the Department of Sociology, was quoted in a Dec. 13 Sacramento Bee story about urban legends. "A lot of times they play upon anxieties and fears you have," Best said. "They are a way that people talk about social problems . . . And they're a way of passing along wisdom about how to behave and how to worry."

Russell Dynes, professor emeritus of sociology and founding director of UD’s Disaster Research Center, was quoted in a Dec. 11 Miami Herald story about the value of neighborhood networks in providing shelter for people left homeless following Hurricane Wilma.

Kimmie Meissner, defending national figure skating bronze medalist who trains at UD and competes for the UD Figure Skating Club, was featured in a story in the Dec. 10 News Journal. Meissner is preparing for the national championships that will begin Jan. 7 in St. Louis, Mo. The top three finishers will make the U.S. Olympic Team and compete in the Winter Olympics to be held in Turin, Italy.

Julio Carrion, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Dec. 9 Wall Street Journal story about the political climate for change in Latin America.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Dec. 8 Financial Times story about a settlement between the Canadian law firm Torys and Hollinger International Media.
