UD, 2 Italian universities sign exchange agreement

Members of the Italian delegation stop for a mid-morning cup of coffee at Vita Nova, UD’s student-run restaurant, during their campus tour.
5:04 p.m., Dec. 6, 2005--The University of Delaware, the University of Roma, La Sapienza, and Luiss University of Rome signed a general exchange agreement on Dec. 1, allowing the universities to collaborate on hotel management, tourism and fashion design programs.

The delegation from Italy visited UD as part of an official state visit sponsored by Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner’s office.

Lesa Griffiths, director of UD’s Center for International Studies, said the agreement “provides a framework for exchanges of undergraduate and graduate students and for collaborative research between the faculties of the University of Delaware and the Roman universities. We look forward to developing a long and productive relationship with the universities and with the city of Rome.”

The Italian delegation--which included Mariapia Garavaglia, vice mayor of Rome, Catarina Saccara, Rome director of tourism; Alberto Giannetti, Gov. Minner's official state representative to Italy; Attilio Celant, professor at the University of Roma, La Sapienza and Massimo Baldini, professor at Luiss University of Rome--met with UD President David Roselle and Vice Provost Bobby Gempesaw in the conference room in Hullihen Hall for the signing of the agreement.

As they toured the University, the group gathered information about UD’s Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) program and the fashion and apparel studies department in preparation for the exchange of students, faculty and programs.

Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair and Professor in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, said this is a rare opportunity for his students and faculty to have first-hand knowledge of the Roman hospitality and tourism industry. “Rome is one of those icon hospitality cities, a place where our students can enhance their educations. They will now have access to tourism sites, hotel and restaurants they wouldn’t have had without the agreement,” he said.

The tour of UD’s hotel, the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware, and it’s HRIM teaching facility, the Marriott Center for Hospitality and Tourism, allowed the delegation to observe students, assigned to the hotel for a semester, being trained in hotel management while learning all facets of running the hotel firsthand. Under the supervision of faculty, HRIM students are able to apply what they learn in theory courses to actually managing a hotel.

Marsha Dickson, chair of the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, said her department is “exploring ways that we can expand our linkages with universities in key apparel production centers, such as Italy. This agreement comes at an excellent time and we look forward to exploring opportunities for student and faculty exchange between UD and the universities in Rome.”
