11:24 a.m., April 14, 2006--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Thirty UD students who spent spring break gutting houses in the Ninth Ward section of New Orleans hard hit by Hurricane Katrina were featured in the April 17 People magazine. The story featured photographs of the group at work, and a large photograph of student Mary Akhimien and quotes students Brandi Gilbert and David Williams.

Michael F. Middaugh, assistant vice president for institutional research and planning, is featured in an April 14 Chronicle of Higher Education story about a presentation to the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.

Joel Best, chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, has written a column on educational fads in the April 14 Chronicle of Higher Education.

Anu Sivaraman, assistant professor of marketing, was quoted in the March/April issue of College Bound Teen in a story about blogs, telling the magazine “It becomes a great tool to add on to their resumes.”

Julio Carrion, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in an April 11 Wall Street Journal story about elections in Peru.

Janet Hethorn, associate professor of fashion and apparel studies, was quoted in an April 11 Detroit News story about plans by the city school district to crack down with a strict dress code.

James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, was quoted in an April 11 Wilmington News Journal story about job force cuts in the state by Bank of America following its acquisition of MBNA America.

Monté Ross, new UD men's basketball coach, was featured in a April 9 Philadelphia Inquirer column by Stephen A. Smith, who was a teammate at Winston-Salem State University.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was featured in a substantive April 9 question-and-answer story about boards of directors and executive pay in The New York Times. Elson was quoted in April 13 San Jose Mercury News and Reuters stories about Google, an April 8 St. Paul Pioneer Press story about UnitedHealth, an April 7 Associated Press story about a proxy fight at Massey Energy, an April 7 Wilmington News Journal story about directors' pay at the DuPont Co., April 6 Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Bloomberg News stories about directors' pay at Coca-Cola, and an April 4 Washington Post story on prison terms for former Westar executives.

UD's faculty art exhibit was featured in an April 7 Wilmington News Journal story, which quoted Janis Tomlinson, director of University Museums; Peter Williams, professor of art; William Deering, assistant professor of art; Lance Winn, assistant professor of art; Bob Straight, professor of art; and Virginia Bradley, chairperson of the Department of Fine Arts and Visual Communications. Williams also was cited in an April 14 Detroit News item about a show there in which he is exhibiting.

Xiao-Hai Yan, Mary A. S. Lighthipe Chair of Marine Studies, was featured on the Science Now site on April 6 for his work in the use of satellite technology to study “meddies,” elusive underwater whirlpools in the Earth's seas.

Eleanor Craig, associate professor of economics, was quoted in an April 5 Wilmington News Journal story on job growth in Delaware.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was featured in an April 2 Wilmington News Journal story.
