Talks on SETI, intelligent design May 1, 2

3:55 p.m., April 28, 2006--Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, will discuss “A Privileged Planet? Intelligent Design and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence” at 7 p.m., Monday, May 1, in 005 Kirkbride Hall. Shostak will give another lecture discussing the current efforts at SETI and in the emerging field of astrobiology at 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, in 100 Sharp Lab.

The first lecture will feature the hour-long film Privileged Planet that was shown to promote intelligent design at the Smithsonian Institute last summer. After the film, Shostak will provide an analysis of the film followed by a question-and-answer session.

In the second lecture, Shostak will talk about his employer and astrobiology. The SETI Institute currently conducts and coordinates all U.S. radio astronomy efforts to search for other civilizations and extraterrestrial activity.

The event is co-sponsored by the Secular Student Alliance, the Society of Physics Students and Beta Beta Beta.
