Undergrad researchers recognized by ASBMB 10:29 a.m., April 14, 2006--University of Delaware students took five of the 19 honorable mention awards in the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's national undergraduate research poster competition on April 2 in San Francisco. Honorable mention awards were presented to Agata Bielska, a senior biochemistry major and Barry M. Goldwater Scholar; Eric Hardter, a senior biochemistry major; Kristen Reese, a recent graduate with a degree in biology; Jessica Hall, a senior animal science major and Liang-I Kang, a senior biological sciences major recently awarded a Goldwater Scholarship and a scholarship from the Excellence in Education Foundation. Half the UD students who presented posters were recognized, and the timing couldn't have been better, according to Harold B. White II, professor of chemistry and biochemistry. “The awards ceremony was given just before a plenary lecture by Tom Cech, who is the president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, so we were sort of biting our nails and hoping our students did well,'' White said. The institute sponsors UD's undergraduate research program. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant ends this summer, and an announcement of future funding is expected in May, White said. "While at the meeting, the students got to meet and talk with three Nobel Prize laureates," David Usher, associate professor of biological sciences and assistant director of the HHMI Program at UD, said.
