Blue Hen women’s tennis off to a strong start

11:58 a.m., Oct. 6, 2004--The University of Delaware women's tennis team is off to its best start in five seasons after the Fightin’ Blue Hens posted a 5-2 victory over Villanova University on Tuesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House tennis courts.

The Hens, whose 6-0 start is the best since the 1999-2000 squad started off 6-0 on the way to a 15-5 mark, won four of the six singles matches and won two out of three doubles competitions to post the victory over Villanova.

UD freshman Susan Pollack defeated Villanova's Candice Carlin 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, sophomore Liz Perlow won by default over Colleen Speaker at No. 2, sophomore Sari Shuster defeated Leighann Reilly 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, and sophomore Marissa Singer defeated Karyn Coppeilliney 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

Pollack and Perlow remained unbeaten on the season with identical records of 10-0. Shuster improved to 9-1 and Singer to 5-1.

UD won two doubles matches as Pollack and Shuster combined for an 8-1 win over Carlin and Reilly at No. 1 and Jamie deGraffenreid and Julie Schiller earned a 9-8 (7-5) win over Morgan Flezzani and Katie Slezzier at No. 3.

UD, which defeated Villanova for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, will continue action on Saturday, Oct. 9, when the team hosts LaSalle University.
