Open WorldCat expands library access

9:42 a.m., Nov. 9, 2004--The University of Delaware Library is participating in the recently expanded Open WorldCat Program sponsored by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), the world’s largest library cooperative.

Open WorldCat will offer the entire collection of more than 53 million records for access by Google and Yahoo! Search users. The new upgraded Open WorldCat program will automatically include the more than 15,000 OCLC libraries that contribute ownership information to World Cat. This means that information about books held by the UD Library may be searched via Google and Yahoo! Search.

Although the Open WorldCat will move from a pilot program to a permanent, ongoing program in January, the database will be open for access to Google and Yahoo! Search users as early as this month.

“Perhaps the most significant benefit of Open WorldCat is that University of Delaware library users who regularly use Google or Yahoo! Search will discover that, in numerous cases, the University of Delaware Library owns books on the topics they desire,” Susan Brynteson, May Morris Director of Libraries, said.
