Downtown Newark plans special holiday celebrations

3:11 p.m., Nov. 30, 2004--Downtown Newark is celebrating the holidays with several special events. Winterfest will be held from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3 (rain date Dec. 4), and special Wednesday shopping and dining nights for different groups of shoppers will be held from 3-8 p.m. on Dec. 1, 8, 15 and 22. In addition, strolling Santa will be in the Newark Shopping Center, greeting shoppers and giving goodies to children, from noon to 3 p.m., on Saturdays, Dec. 4, 11 and 18.

All “Wonderful Winter Wednesdays” will offer restaurant and shopping specials, plus entertainment and refreshments for different groups of shoppers. Women’s Shopping Night, Dec. 1, is for women shoppers with a visit from Santa for women only. Dec. 8 is designated as Men’s Shopping Night. Kids’ Shopping Night, Dec. 15, offers original items for sale within children’s budgets, plus a visit from Santa. Candlelight Shopping Night on Dec. 22 will feature candle luminaries for an old-fashioned holiday atmosphere.

This year, the community is invited to participate in Cans for a Cause, a canned food drive through Dec. 22 that benefits the Newark Area Welfare Committee. All nonperishable items are appreciated and may be placed in collection bins at Brunswick Blue Hen Lanes, Cameras, Etc., Captain Blue Hen, Crystal Concepts, Copy Maven, Delaware Book Exchange, Downtown Parking Office, Edward Jones Investments, Happy Harry’s, Hollywood Tan, National 5 & 10, Newark Natural Foods, The Days of Knights, The Learning Station, Lieberman Books, Mid-Atlantic Ballet and Village Imports.

Downtown Newark gift certificates, available at Formal Affairs, Village Imports, Hyacinths & Dragonflies, the Downtown Parking Office and Newark City Hall, are accepted at more than 70 downtown shops and restaurants. Gift certificates also may be purchased online at [http://Newark.de.us/downtown].

There is free parking at on-street meters and in municipal parking lots for Downtown Newark special holiday events, and parking will be free all day, every day, from Dec. 15-Jan. 2.
