UD women’s basketball defeats Stony Brook

UD’s Tyresa Smith
9:07 a.m., Dec. 1, 2004--Sophomore guard Tyresa Smith scored 18 points to lead the University of Delaware women’s basketball team to an 83-58 victory over the State University of New York Stony Brook on Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Smith, who came off the bench after starting the first two games of the season, also had 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who improved to 2-1. Smith hit nine of her 16 shots.

UD sophomore guard Alena Koshansky had 15 points, including three three-pointers, senior forward Tiara Malcom had 12 points and six rebounds, and seniors Julie Sailer and Tiffany Young had nine points apiece.

The Hens shot 53.1 percent from the field and scored the most points since an 87-72 victory at Marist College in December 2001.

UD jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Stony Brook cut the margin to 11-7. The Hens then went on another run to extend the lead to 23-12, and held a 39-28 lead at the half.

The Hens got off to a quick second half start, as well, building leads of as many as 26 points.

UD will participate in the University of Arizona’s Mission Management and Trust Fiesta Classic tournament on Dec. 4-5. In addition to the host team, other participants are Weber State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

UD will face Weber State University at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4. Weber State, a member of the Big Sky Conference, is 3-1 and most recently defeated Loyola Marymount University 78-62 to win that team’s Thanksgiving tournament.

In the second game on Sunday, the Hens will face either host Arizona or UNC Greensboro.

Arizona enters the tournament with a 30-game winning streak on its home court. The Wildcats, ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division I, defeated the University of Texas El Paso 79-47 on Monday to raise their record to 4-1.

UNC Greensboro is 1-2, with a victory over Winthrop University and losses to West Virginia University and the University of Pittsburgh.
