Malcom nets 27 points in exhibition victory

10:43 a.m., Nov. 8, 2004--Senior forward Tiara Malcom scored 27 points to lead the University of Delaware women’s basketball team to a 74-66 exhibition victory over the Netherlands national team on Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Fellow seniors Tiffany Young and Julie Sailer added 11 points each for Head Coach Tina Martin’s Fightin’ Blue Hens, who will open the regular season with a home game at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, against Loyola College of Maryland.

Malcom, the preseason selection as Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, hit eight of 21 shots from the floor and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. She also had six rebounds for the Hens, who never trailed in the game.

Young finished with nine rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Tyresa Smith scored seven points and had four rebounds.

Naomi Halman scored 23 points for the Netherlands, which in its previous two exhibition games had lost to Old Dominion University 88-60 and defeated Villanova University 90-79 in triple overtime.

UD used an early six-point run to take a 12-5 lead with 15:12 remaining in the first half. After the Netherlands pulled to within 21-15, the Hens scored nine straight points, capped by a lay-up by Liz Hayes, to take its largest lead of the half at 30-15 with 4:04 remaining. The Netherlands got within nine at 33-24 in the final minute before Sailer hit a jumper to give the Hens an 11-point halftime lead.

Junior Geneva Livingston scored off a miss to put UD up 44-32 with 15:25 remaining, but the Netherlands scored 12 of the next 16 points to get within 48-44 with 10:56 to play.
