Malcom is preseason CAA Player of the Year

UD’s Tiara Malcom
11:40 a.m., Oct. 28, 2004--Tiara Malcom, a senior forward on the University of Delaware women’s basketball team, has been selected the preseason Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday during the annual basketball media day event held at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum.

Also during the event, Head Coach Tina Martin’s Fightin’ Blue Hens were picked to finish second in the CAA behind perennial power Old Dominion University.

UD went 19-10 last season and finished tied for third in the CAA with a 10-8 conference record. The Hens fell to eventual champion Old Dominion in the conference tournament semifinals.

Since the 1999-2000 season, Martin’s teams have won 20 or more games four times, have won an America East Conference championship and have competed in one NCAA tournament and two Women’s National Invitation Tournaments.

In the preseason poll, Old Dominion received 189 points and 18 first-place votes. UD received 162 points. Virginia Commonwealth University received one first-place vote and was third with 133 points, followed by James Madison University with 121 points and Hofstra University with 113 points.

The College of William and Mary received 87 points, George Mason University 86 points, the University of North Carolina Wilmington 63 points, Drexel University 58 points and Towson University 38 points.

Malcom earned second team All-CAA honors in each of the last two seasons. During the 2003-04 season, she averaged team-highs of 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

A tri-captain, Malcom enters this season ranked 17th on the UD career scoring list with 1,008 points. She is sixth in blocks, with 80, and in field goal percentage, at .482.

Joining Malcom as co-captains of the Hens are senior Julie Sailer, a versatile player who can handle the guard and forward positions, and senior forward Tiffany Young.

UD will play an exhibition game against an international team at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. The Hens will open the regular season against Loyola College of Maryland at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, at The Bob.
