UD women’s basketball adds assistant coaches

10:22 a.m., Oct. 22, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team has added two new assistant coaches, Melissa Dymek and Diana Spencer, Head Coach Tina Martin announced Thursday.

Dymek, who played four seasons at the University of Richmond and earned her degree in May, and Spencer, a four-year letter winner at the University of Colorado, replace Tyrone Perry and Carrie Timmins, who left the staff to pursue other coaching positions.

Perry is now an assistant coach with the men’s basketball team at Mount St. Mary’s College, while Timmins is now a health and physical education teacher and middle school girl's basketball coach at her alma mater, New Oxford (Pa.) High School.

Dymek and Spencer join a staff that includes Martin and Jeanine Radice, associate head coach.

Martin enters her ninth season as head coach of the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who expect to contend for the Colonial Athletic Association title this season.

UD returns all but one letter winner from last year’s squad that posted a record of 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the CAA. The Hens have won 19 or more games each of the last five seasons, including an NCAA tournament berth in 2000-01.

Dymek is a native of Hazleton, Pa. She played in 50 games at Richmond, where she was a guard. She has been active as a counselor at various basketball camps and as a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has worked with Habitat for Humanity. She also has been a mentor for elementary school students.

Spencer is a native of Syracuse, N.Y. She was a four-year letter winner as a forward at Colorado, which advanced to the NCAA tournament in each of her final three seasons. While at Colorado, she worked with elementary school students in the community, was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was a counselor at several basketball camps. She served as an assistant coach at Boulder (Colo.) High School in 2003-04.
