UD Heart Walk effort is best ever

1:13 p.m., Nov. 5, 2004--The donations have been counted, the results have just been released and it turns out that the University of Delaware turned in its best-ever performance in this year’s American Heart Walk. Thanks to its 125 volunteer walkers, UD raised a record-setting $14,624 for the event, held Sept. 14 at the Riverfront in Wilmington.

The UD team also earned its highest rating since joining the annual event in 1998, placing fourth among the 50 businesses taking part in the fund-raiser that benefits the American Heart Association in its fight against heart disease.

Last year, UD raised more than $13,700 and placed sixth among the 50 Delaware companies that participated.

“The turn-out of employees and students was terrific, and YoUDee and the cheerleaders strengthened our presence amidst the many companies that participated in this year’s fund-raiser,” Marianne Carter, UD Employee Wellness Center director and team captain, said. “I’m really proud of the UD team.”

Team captains included:

  • Lesley Wilkes, BE ’06 (Alpha Phi);
  • Phil Wescott, an instructor in the Department of Communication (Commpro Striders);
  • Darlene Cartwright (Heart Beats);
  • Sarah Wiegner, AS ’05 (Gamma Sigma Sigma);
  • Randee Tobin, secretary, dean’s office, health and nursing sciences (Heart and Sole);
  • Nicole Marshall, CHNS ’07 (Lambda Kappa Beta);
  • Linda Smith, program coordinator, Employee Wellness Center;
  • Marianne Carter;
  • Marcial Rollison;
  • Dara Missan, CHNS ’05 (Medical Technology);
  • Patty Fogg, human resources manager in Facilities;
  • Margo McDonough, editor, Office of Public Relations;
  • Richie Holland, manager, human resources;
  • Ruth Evans, administrative assistant, Student Health Service; and
  • Sharon Turner, administrative assistant, Office of the Executive Vice President.

UD members of the American Heart Association 500 club—those who raised $500 or more individually—include Carter, Evans, Holland and Tobin. Top individual honors went to Carter, who raised $1,830.

The top five fund-raising captains include Carter, Evans, Rollison, Tobin and Holland.

“The individuals who volunteered to serve as ‘Heart Captains’ did a phenomenal job in recruiting participants and I’m grateful for their assistance,” Carter said. “Our goal was to show the community that UD has heart, and we did that.”
