UD volleyball team announces signings

11:11 a.m., Nov. 18, 2004--Two high school volleyball standouts, Kelly Matthias and Clar Farwell, will compete for the University of Delaware next season, Head Coach Bonnie Kenny has announced.

Matthias is a 6-foot, 2-inch middle blocker from Quakertown, Pa., High School, and Farwell is a 6-foot right side hitter from Downers Grove, Ill., South High School, the alma mater of current Fightin’ Blue Hens star Claire McCormack.

Matthias led Quakertown High in kills and blocks each of the last three years. She was a two-year captain and earned All-Suburban One League honors and also competes for the Philadelphia Volleyball Academy. A four-year honor roll student, she plans to major in visual communications or advertising at UD.

“Kelly is one of the best volleyball players in the region,” Kenny said. “It is nice to be able to recruit regionally and keep the best talent close to home. Kelly is an experienced and physical middle blocker who will contribute immediately.”

Farwell helped Downers Grove South High advance to the Illinois state semifinals this fall and to the state quarterfinals during her junior year in 2003. She was voted one of the Chicago area’s top players by the Chicago Tribune and played club volleyball with the Alliance Juniors. She plans to major in advertising at UD.

“Clar hails from the Chicago area and plays for one of the top high school and club programs in Illinois,” Kenny said. “We look for Clar to contribute on the right side or on the outside for us. With her wealth of experience and intense play, she will be a welcome addition to the program.”

UD has had a breakout year, finishing the regular season with a record of 22-8 and earning a berth in the four-team Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament that will be played this weekend at Towson University.
